Domaine de Tours Côtes du Rhône Vin de Pays du Vacluse Rouge 2013 $32
Situated right outside of the village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine de Tours is crafted by Emmanuel Reynard, who also is the winemaker for the cult-status Chateau Rayas which sells for astronomically prices. Mostly Grenache blended with Cinsault, Counoise, Syrah and Merlot, this wine has luscious ripe fruit and smooth tannins that glide on the palate.
Domaine L’Espigouette Gigondas 2014 $ 39
Gigondas is neighbors with Châteauneuf-du-Pape and extends north-west from the jagged Dentelles di Montmiral mountain range. The vineyards are at high elevation, reaching up to 2,600 feet and produce more dense and robust Grenache based wines. Bernard Latour along with his wife and two sons produce this dense and chewy red from 70% Grenache and 30% Mourvèdre. The wine has an enticing nose of lovely ripe red and black fruits with spice and cigar box.
Domaine Saint-Prefert Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2014 $50
Saint Prefert is run by the talented Isabel Ferrando, who studied winemaking in the nearby Gigondas. Her first vintage was 2003, and critics quickly took notice of her brilliantly crafted wines. The 2014 vintage is 80% Grenache with Cinsault, Syrah and Mourvèdre and was aged 15 moths in concrete and old oak barrels. This wine has an exotic perfume of candied fruits, Asian spices, Turkish coffee and juniper with a lusciously rich palate ad long finish.
