Claypool Cellars Rosé of Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast 2016 -100% Pinot Noir
Les and Chaney Claypool have been making world-class, small production wines from the Russian River and Sonoma Coast appellations since 2007. While they produce less than 1,000 cases annually, the bulk of it in Pinot Noir, their esteem winemaking team of Ross Cobb and Katy Wilson also produce a limited amount of Rosé. Lucky are we to have enough to serve it by the glass in both restaurants.
Their 2016 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir Rosé boasts beautiful notes of white peach, stone fruit, fresh strawberry, nectarine and lemon zest. It has bright acidity and minerality with a nice mid-palate texture from the natural barrel fermentation. This Rosé more than holds it's own against our two other contenders from France.
Mas Des Cadenet Rosé Sainte-Victoire 2016 50% Grenache, 40% Cinsault 10% Syrah
At the base of the Sainte-Victoire mountain in the heart of Provence, (Cézanne’s favorite view) this family estate has been owned and run by the Negrel family for seven generations. Sainte-Victoire was one of twenty-two winemakers who fought for their sub-appellation of Côtes de Provence to be recognized as Rosé – about time, as Rosé from this region is unarguably some of the best produced in Provence. The vignerons of Sainte-Victoire also all elected to practice organic viticulture and have all been certified organic since 2013.
Long dry summers here produce a wonderfully balanced Rosé, with a white floral bouquet, delicate fruit and restrained minerality. Free run, cold maceration, drawn off as the soft sunset pink color begins to show.
Peyrassol Rosé Commendarie de Peyrassol, 2016 - Syrah, Mourvèdre, Grenache
Such beauty and pedigree rarely come along in the same bottle, much less for this price. Founded in the 13th Century as a way station for pilgrims heading to the Holy Land, Peyrassol is truly blessed. First, with its location, 1000 feet above the Massif de Maures in the heart of Provence; secondly with its clay and limestone soils, known to produce Grand Crus in their AOC category; third for the fact that since 2001 the vineyards have been under the clearly focused control of the same Cacaret/Austrys family.
Peyrassol was a favorite wine to pair with Ryan’s summer menus last year, and we are pleased to offer it because it represents the essence of what we love about Provencal Rosés. It has gorgeous pale rose color with a delicate fruit blossom nose that opens to an elegant, but lively minerality.
Night harvest, direct press and cold maceration, aged in SS after fermentation. Wonderful history, great drinking Rosé, and the sculpture gardens aren’t bad either.
